Soapstone is really a form of talc called steatite. It has a smooth, dense, non-absorbent surface. Soapstone is typically grey, bluish, green, or brown in colour. Its name is derived from its 'soapy' feel and softness. Soapstone's remarkable qualities have long been recognized. People have quarried soapstone for thousands of years. Native Americans on both the East and West coasts travelled long miles in canoes from the mainland to obtain the soft rock to make bowls, cooling slabs, smoking pipes, and ornaments as early as the Late Archaic Period (3000 to 5000 years ago).
